For many of us, our go-to for waking up in the morning and feeling refreshed is a cup of coffee. It gives us the energy we need to start our day. But, here’s a little secret about coffee. That energy that it so miraculously provides can be translated to fat-burning energy. Just when you thought you couldn’t love java more. A recent study by the University of Granada discovered coffee’s hidden perk that may put pre-workout out of business.
The University of Granada performed an experiment with 15 men in their 30s as the test subjects. Each of the men consumed a controlled measurement of either caffeinated powder or placebo 30 minutes prior to working out. They then participated in 4 rounds of various exercises at either 8am or 5pm over the span of several days. Neither the test subjects nor the researchers knew who had been given the caffeine or the placebo. Each participant was exposed to the same conditions: diet, exercise, and quantities of powder.
The data collected after the participants cycling exercises found that those who had ingested caffeine did burn more fat than those in the placebo group. For the 8am session, the caffeinated subjects burned 11% more fat during their workout and 29% more in the evening.
The explanation behind this finding is that when caffeine comes in contact with the energy naturally created by our body’s fatty acids, it kicks into high gear. Since caffeine promotes adrenaline, it promotes lipolysis, which is the process our body undergoes to break down fats. This is the system to which fat becomes muscle. A caffeinated body also awakens more muscle fibers and ultimately makes us feel as if our workout is more enjoyable and effortless.
