The Season of Giving

November 01, 2019

It's the season of giving, but here at Growers Alliance, we do our best to give back all year long. Through our 501C3 non-profit organization - Kijiji International, we are working to improve the lifestyles of the coffee growers along with educating them on utilizing any available resources to become more economically independent.

One reason we started Growers Alliance was to provide coffee farmers in Kenya with a fair, living wage. Beyond that, we wanted to give back to the farmers who pour their time into growing and harvesting our coffee. For every purchase you make at Growers Alliance Cafe and Gift Shop, we give 10% of that back to our coffee farmers and their communities. Thanks to our loyal customers, we have had the opportunity to start a 16 station Dialysis Clinic in Naivasha, Kenya, dug clean water artesian wells (boreholes) in Gachuriri and Kiandegwa villages, Embu, and helped to support the Little Angels Children's Home & Joy Rescue Center for HIV orphanages.

Our efforts go beyond healthcare. We are big proponents of education and believe that the backbone of a strong economy starts with education. Primary schools up to grade 8 are free for students to attend, but the facilities and supplies are lacking. A portion of our proceeds has helped to build and upgrade the Kathunguri Primary School buildings and classrooms from mud and grass thatched classes to stone bricks. We have also been able to supply more than 50 students in Kathunguri Primary School with school supplies and uniforms over the last few years, and we hope to continue supporting their students for years to come.

A portion of our proceeds is also used to promote modern sustainable farming methods amongst our coffee farmers. In the past, we have helped the Gikumbo Coffee society members renovate their water tanks and coffee storage cellars along with providing them with educational opportunities to learn about organic composting, conservation, land management, organic seeds, and more. We hope to help provide our coffee farmers with the knowledge and tools to create a sustainable coffee farm that will help them raise their standards of living and economic independence.
